With the new iPhone device the new operating system iOS 6 was released by Apple. The user interface design pretty much stayed the same. Only a few changes were made, most important is probably the bigger screen, which makes it small-handed persons impossible to navigate the interface design only with one thumb. More important is that new iOS interface design doesn’t include the Google map app any longer. Was that a wise decision?
Apple’s user interface design – a success story
Apple always focused on the user interface design of their devices and achieved huge success. No other smartphone manufactures copy their interface design. But could this change? Nowadays already Samsung sells more smartphones than Apple does, probably because of the different price ranges they offer. With the latest change of the interface design the question raises if Apple too much wants to avoid collaboration with any other vendor. That’s not a surprising aim for a company, but changing the user interface design when the own app is not working isn’t a clever idea. A lot of comments and blogs were posted on the net after the presentation of the new iPhone. No Google map app in the new interface design? The reaction was mainly negative. If Apple had its own application, which performed as well as the Google Maps app, people would probably accept it. But only a few days after the iPhone 5 release Apple’s CEO Tim Cook advised everyone to use Google maps or similar provider for street navigation purposes, because Apple’s own application isn’t performing well. One could say that removing the Google app of the interface design was a hasty decision. And Apple has to be careful, because the competition is not asleep.
